The Ketogenic Diet has been buzzing lately in the news, but not many know what exactly it exactly covers. The Ketogenic Diet (keto for short) is a diet that emphasizes low-carbohydrate intake and high fat intake. It has been compared to the Atkins diet and other low-carb diets.
The purpose of this diet is to achieve a metabolic state known as ketosis. By drastically reducing our carbohydrate intake and supplementing carbs with fat, we are able to enter this state of ketosis. When triggering this state of ketosis, we are able to shift our body’s metabolism away from burning carbs and have it focus on burning fat more efficiently. This process turns fat into ketones in the liver, which then is used to supply energy to the brain.
